DUBLIN - Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul has said, ``security situation in Iraq has deteriorated and become a gradually increasing jeopardy a year after overthrow of regime of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.``
Speaking at the Mid-Term Ministerial Meeting of Euro-Mediterranean Foreign Ministers in Irish capital Dublin, Gul said, ``security situation in Iraq has deteriorated and become a gradually increasing jeopardy a year after overthrow of Saddam`s regime. This jeopardy is a source of concern for the whole region. As neighboring countries with Iraq, we should convene as soon as possible.``
``Efforts of the neighboring countries with Iraq will concentrate after the United Nations undertakes a more influential role in Iraq. Such a development will pave the way for a transparent transition period in Iraq,`` Gul added.
Meanwhile, sources told the A.A correspondent that Turkey wanted meeting of the neighboring countries with Iraq to be held before the Arab League Summit on May 22.
Earlier in the day, Gul met with Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa and Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher of Egypt.
