MAY OUR TURN COME NEXT!
Ten countries joined the European Union (EU) on Saturday. It will surely be Turkey's turn one day. New EU members including Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Greek Cypriot side, and Malta celebrated EU membership joyfully. Thus, dreams of 75 million people to be EU citizens have become true. May Turkey's turn come next! Turkey has been exerting efforts to become an EU member since 1963. After ten new countries joined it, the EU has become a giant including 25 members, 450 million people, 188 regions, 20 official languages. This enlargement ended the division of Europe after the World War II. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who went to Irish capital Dublin for the EU enlargement summit, seemed to be very close with EU Term President Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who welcomed him.

World famous actor Brad Pitt told Hurriyet daily that he would surely visit Turkey and Troy was a story which impressed him much. Pitt said that he wanted to see the real Troy.

150 PEOPLE DETAINED IN DIYARBAKIR
No bad events occurred in Turkey during May Day celebrations yesterday. There were two different demonstrations in Istanbul. People often shouted slogans against U.S. President George Bush. Police detained 150 people who staged illegal demonstration in southeastern Diyarbakir province.

PAPADOPOULOS WISHES IN TURKISH LANGUAGE
Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos replied to questions after the ceremony held in Dublin, Ireland upon accession of ten new countries to the European Union (EU). After saying in Turkish ''insallah'' (I hope that), Papadopoulos added that there would be solution in Cyprus. He said that Ankara would not be integrated with the EU as long as it did not recognize an EU member.

ONE HUNDRED AND 66 PEOPLE DETAINED IN UNEVENTFUL MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS
Two separate groups held two separate demonstrations during the May Day in Istanbul for the first time since officials did not allow people to stage demonstration at Taksim Square. No unfavorable incidents occurred in 45 provinces since demonstrators had earlier asked for permission while 56 people were detained at Taksim Square. One hundred and ten people were detained in southeastern Diyarbakir province when they staged illegal protests.

NO COMPROMISE IN YOK CRISIS
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told rectors in the Interuniversity Board, ''you are late in preparing the draft Higher Election Board (YOK) law. Thus, our efforts for a compromise were in vain. We will bring our own draft to the agenda of the parliament.'' Saying that ''the public opinion was expecting it,'' Erdogan hinted that the government would not take a backward step regarding the regulation which foresaw that coefficient imbalance between vocational high schools and normal high schools.

LOIZIDOU: I ALSO OWN THE PROPERTIES IN GIRNE
Greek Cypriot woman Titiana Loizidou has taken her compensation worth of 1.2 million Euros after the lawsuit she filed against Turkish Republic at European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for gaining compensation for the properties she had left in Girne. However, she is expecting to own property rights of her houses in Girne and to settle in Girne one day.

EUROPE CELEBRATES HISTORIC ENLARGEMENT
The historic enlargement of the European Union (EU) had been celebrated throughout the day yesterday in nearly the whole European continent. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who attended the ceremony which was held for the accession of ten new members of the EU in Dublin, Ireland, said regarding the Greek Cypriot administration which Turkey did not recognize, ''the world has recognized it. What can you do by saying 'I don't recognize it'? We are obliged to take our place in world facts whatever the world facts showed.''

CORRECTION OF ERDOGAN'S GAFFE
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ''the south Cyprus has already been recognized. There is nothing to do more.'' Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, ''your words may be misunderstood. This doesn't mean that Turkey recognizes the Greek Cypriot side.''

ANTALYA BREAKS FIRST RECORD OF THIS YEAR
The number of tourists coming to southern Antalya province by planes reached 909 thousand in the first three months of 2004. This number was 714 thousand in the first four months of 2003. Thirty-three thousand people came to Antalya by planes on April 30. Thus, April 30 was the busiest day.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOU DON'T RECOGNIZE GREEK CYPRIOTS?
European Union (EU) Term President Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern welcomed Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Irish capital Dublin, where a ceremony was held upon the accession of ten countries to the EU. When asked about his views about ''recognition of the Greek Cypriots'', Erdogan said, ''they have already been recognized. There is nothing more to be done about this issue. The world has recognized it. What can you do by saying 'I don't recognize it'? These are meaningless things. Saying 'I don't recognize it' won't benefit you.''
EU: IT WON'T AFFECT YOU
European Commission President Romano Prodi said that Turks fulfilled their duties in Cyprus and deserved membership. Prodi noted that they wanted Turkey to become a European Union (EU) member. Stating that Ankara had made significant reforms, Prodi said that Copenhagen criteria were important for the EU. European Parliament (EP) President Pat Cox said that they would follow assistance to be extended to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

TRNC PRIME MINISTER TALAT: WE WANT THE TRUTH
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat said that attitudes of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots towards the referenda held in Cyprus should take their place in the United Nations (U.N.) report. Talat noted that the world should approve the attitudes of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

AZERBAIJAN TAKES FIRST STEP FOR FLIGHTS TO TRNC
Azerbaijan started initiatives to lift the aviation embargo on Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). An Azerbaijani official phoned the Directorate General of Civilian Aviation and said that they wanted to start flights to Ercan Airport in TRNC.

ERDOGAN: IT IS NOT A SOLUTION TO SAY I DON'T RECOGNIZE GREEK CYPRIOTS
While discussions are continuing how relations with Greek Cypriots will be carried out, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that Greek Cypriot administration was recognized by the world. He said, ''what can you do by saying 'I do not recognize' in a milieu in which everybody, from the European Union (EU) to the United Nations, recognized it?''
