Turkish Police Detain About 100 People In Attempt To Stage Illegal Demonstration In Diyarbakir

DIYARBAKIR - Turkish police detained on Saturday about 100 people including Democratic People's Party (DEHAP) deputy leader Ali Urkut who attempted to stage an illegal demonstration in southeastern Diyarbakir province on May Day.
A group including Urkut, Human Rights Association (IHD) deputy chairman Reyhan Yalcindag and IHD Diyarbakir branch's director Selahattin Demirtas marched through Dagkapi Square to release a press statement.
Police warned the group to disperse because they could not release a press statement at Dagkapi Square as Diyarbakir Governor's Office allowed May Day celebrations to be held only in Diyarbakir Fair Area.
Nearly 100 people including Urkut, Yalcindag and Demirtas were detained when the group continued to march.
