ANKARA - The Turkish side will monitor implementation of the revised Cyprus regulations which were approved by the European Union (EU) Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) and the EU Council for two months.
Diplomatic sources told A.A correspondent on Thursday that the EU had reshaped the regulations in line with proposals of the Turkish side.
Despite the changes, the regulations do not meet requests of the Turkish side.
Diplomatic sources said that Turkey would monitor implementation of the regulations for the next two months. At the end of this period, the EU is expected to prepare a new opening package.
Under the regulations, the EU citizens will be allowed to free movement in passages from the Green Line by making a contribution to the tourism sector in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
It is still unclear whether the EU would accept TRNC as an interlocutor, what kind of a representation would be opened in TRNC, and what kind of a method would be pursued to overcome legal obstacles.
Under decision of the COREPER, the EU Commission will technically determine necessary steps and methods to put an end to economic isolation against Turkish Cypriot community and put forward proposals to this end in the coming weeks.
Use of the EU's financial aid of 259 million euros to TRNC will become clear under these proposals.
The EU Commission is expected to explain its proposals within two months.
Cyprus regulations are envisaged to come into force as of May 1, 2004.
