COLOGNE - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said, ''as a guarantor state, Turkey has displayed its good-will about Cyprus with 66 percent.''
Following their bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Erdogan and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder replied to questions of journalists on Tuesday.
Pointing out that the bilateral, political and commercial relations between Turkey and Germany had further accelerated since German Chancellor Schroeder's visit to Turkey in 2004, Prime Minister Erdogan said, ''today, we have the opportunity of discussing Turkey's European Union (EU) membership process and the Cyprus issue in detail.''
''As a guarantor state, Turkey has displayed its good-will about Cyprus with 66 percent,'' he added.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Schroeder said in his part that Turkish Cypriot people who supported United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan, should not be punished because of the Greek Cypriot side which rejected the plan.
Noting that the decision of the EU-member countries' foreign ministers to provide Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with an economic assistance of 259 million euros was very appropriate, German Chancellor Schroeder added that Germany had been supporting the decision.
