NSC STATEMENT: COUNCIL HAS DETERMINED THAT EU ACCESSION OF GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE WHICH GAVE NEGATIVE RESPONSE TO COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION PLAN IN CYPRUS WHILE EXCLUSION OF TURKISH CYPRIOT SIDE WHICH GAVE POSITIVE RESPONSE

ANKARA - The National Security Council (NSC) said on Monday that the council, in its meeting the same day, determined that European Union (EU) accession of the Greek Cypriot side which gave negative response to comprehensive solution plan in Cyprus while exclusion of the Turkish Cypriot side which gave positive response created a contradictory and unjust situation.
At the end of today's NSC meeting, a statement was issued, saying, ''at the meeting, the new situation that has emerged after the Greek Cypriot side rejected the Annan Plan which was supported by the United Nations, United States and European Union as a result of the negotiation process that was initiated by Turkey in order to reach a fair and lasting solution in Cyprus and put to referenda in the island on April 24, 2004 has been discussed in detail.''
''With this result, the council has determined that exclusion of the Turkish Cypriot side which gave positive response to the plan in return for the accession of the Greek Cypriot side which overwhelmingly gave negative response to the comprehensive solution which the United Nations and European Union described balanced and livable to the European Union on May 1, 2004 created a contradictory and unjust situation,'' it said.
''It has been expressed that there is a necessity for international organizations' and states' taking into consideration the will that Turkey and Turkish Cypriot people showed for solution in the referendum and there is a necessity for keeping their promises to 'lift restrictions on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and make social, political and economic betterments'.''
''The council has evaluated the attitudes displayed regarding referendum as efforts to determine between right and wrong and has once again stressed that Turkey's responsibilities for the TRNC and the unity and solidarity of the Turkish nation have become more important,'' it added.
