LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat has said that they should focus on the future after developing a common policy with TRNC President.
TRNC Prime Minister Talat and TRNC Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas held a joint news conference after their meeting with TRNC President Rauf Denktas.
Talat said that President Denktas and they discussed the new situation emerged after the referendums. He said he would go to Brussels late on the same day and participate in European Parliament's foreign affairs, human rights, defense and security commissions' meetings on results of referendums.
Noting that Serdar Denktas and he would go to Ankara on April 29, Talat said that evaluation meetings were underway and their initiatives would be carried out in a more coordinated way after those meetings were completed.
Replying to a question, Talat said that President Denktas and they discussed ''every issue''. Replying to another question, Talat said that he had sent letters to EU Term President Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and European General Affairs Council members.
Noting that his letters were replied, Talat said that EU Enlargement Commissioner Guenter Verheugen and EU Foreign Policy and Security Chief Javier Solana telephoned him early the same day and told him they had received his letter and they were doing what was necessary.
Talat said that he wrote in his letter to Ahern that Greek Cypriots had the division of the island ''continued'' by their ''no'' vote and he wanted the EU acquis to be suspended also in southern Cyprus as long as division continued.
Talat said that he wrote in his letter to the General Affairs Commission that Greek Cypriots decided on continuation of division by rejecting Annan's plan, Greek Cypriots could not take any initiative on behalf of Turkish Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots were represented by themselves, Greek Cypriot government could not follow any procedure on behalf of Turkish Cypriots and Green Line arrangement should be reviewed.
Stressing that their demands were feasible, Talat said that Greek Cypriots had signed EU membership on April 16, 2003 so suspension of acquis was possible.
''Acquis can be suspended as it is suspended in the north. Why was it suspended? Because it is not possible. Why is it not possible? Because the island has been divided. As Greek Cypriots have registered and approved division of the island, it is very natural and accurate to freeze the acquis also in the south,'' he said.
Meanwhile, Serdar Denktas said that suspension of implementation of EU acquis in southern Cyprus would remove many possible problems.
TALAT LEAVES FOR ISTANBUL
Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has left for Istanbul.
Prime Minister Talat will leave for Brussels via Istanbul on Tuesday upon invitation of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee.
Talat will return to Istanbul on April 28.
He will proceed to Ankara the same day to hold a series of meetings.
Talat is expected to return to TRNC on April 29.
EKENOGLU LEAVES FOR STRASBOURG
TRNC Parliament Speaker Fatma Ekenoglu and accompanying delegation left on Monday for Strasbourg.
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Lefkosa deputy Ozdil Nami, National Unity Party (UBP) Lefkosa deputy Tahsin Ertugruloglu, Democrat Party (DP) Gazimagusa deputy Hatice Faydali, Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH) Lefkosa deputy Mehmet Cakici and other officials left for Strasbourg with Ekenoglu to attend spring term meeting of Council of Europe.
