ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Ministry gave briefing to the European Union (EU) member countries' ambassadors in Ankara on Monday after the referendum in Cyprus and called for a change in EU Commission's regulations for Cyprus.
Diplomatic sources said that Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal evaluated the current stage under the light of results of referendum during the briefing.
Foreign Ministry said the injustices that were made to TRNC so far should be eliminated, and conveyed the uneasiness felt over the current shape of Cyprus regulation prepared by the EU Commission. The regulation was expected to be discussed in EU General Affairs Council in Luxembourg but later postponed to April 28.
Ankara which does not want approval of the regulations with the shape given in Copenhagen Summit, conveyed its request to ambassadors for amendment of the regulation.
The regulation, which was determined in Copenhagen Summit in December 2002, envisages suspension of EU acquisition to be applied in the north of Cyprus in case of insolubility.
Diplomatic sources said that the regulation created the atmosphere as if Greek Cypriot side was also representing TRNC and stressed that it should be changed because this regulation would set the frame of relations of TRNC with the EU from now on.
Diplomatic sources said that postponement of approval of regulation to April 28 was a good sign and added that they expected a joint attitude from EU about the change in regulation.
