Baykal: Annan Plan Would Bring Forth Serious Problems

ISTANBUL - Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal has said, ''it was revealed that United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan would bring forth serious problems in regard to both Cyprus' future and Turkey's position in the Eastern Mediterranean.''
Baykal left for Belgium on Thursday to attend the Sixth Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PES).
Holding a press conference at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport prior to his departure, Baykal said that recent developments would be assessed at the PES meeting.
Referring to the Cyprus issue, Baykal told reporters, ''it was revealed that the Annan Plan would bring forth serious problems in regard to both Cyprus' future and Turkey's position in the Eastern Mediterranean.''
''If the resolution had been approved by the United Nations Security Council, Turkey would have faced extremely serious difficulties. There are distressing arrangements about Turkey's security in the Annan Plan which would be put to vote in the referendums in Cyprus on April 24. These are still unclear,'' Baykal added.
