LEFKOSA - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Wednesday that U.N. Security Council prepared draft resolution to satisfy Greek Cypriots and make them vote 'yes' to the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan on Cyprus, adding that it was a new situation.
Holding a press conference, Denktas said that U.N. Security Council prepared a draft resolution to satisfy Greek Cypriot side and the draft resolution started its first paragraph by approving all resolutions of the Security Council which were passed so far and stated that he expected TRNC Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat and Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas to oppose it.
Denktas said that the Annan plan was showed as if it was ''a new birth'' and stated that if there was a new birth, there should not be any reference to those decisions which accepted Greek Cypriot side as legitimate government and which accepted Turkish Cypriots as minority.
Denktas said, ''when peace negotiations continue, they put this guarantee issue under the seventh article which gives the U.N. right for armed intervention. Therefore, they expect war in Cyprus and therefore there will be war, not peace in Cyprus. It is a very big negligence and important development. It is a trick to make Greek Cypriots vote 'yes' to the plan,'' he noted.
President Denktas said that huge authorities were tried to be given to U.N. soldiers at the Security Council to satisfy Greek Cypriots and stated that it contradicted the Annan plan.
Denktas said that if the past would continue in the same way, the Annan plan did not mean anything, stating that Britain was behind those things.
Noting that he would meet with Talat on Wednesday, Denktas said that Serdar Denktas would announce reactions by meeting with representatives.
When reminded of statement of the European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen who said that he did not trust the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos anymore, Denktas said that he did not take Verheugen seriously.
Denktas added that Verheugen undertook a mission to include Cyprus as a whole to the EU and added that Verheugen tried to do it.
