SEZER: ''MODERATE ISLAM MODEL IS NOTHING BUT FUNDAMENTALISM FOR TURKEY''
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has criticized the United States' Greater Middle East Initiative. Speaking at a news conference at the War Academies, President Sezer said, ''attempts to describe secular Turkey as an Islamic Republic or to have people subconsciously adopt some models with meaningless qualifications like 'moderate Islam' are quite baseless and unacceptable.'' He added, ''since moderate Islam is not the regime of the Republic of Turkey, it is understood that some circles envisaged a new regime for our state. Although the model of moderate Islam can be considered a progress for the other Islam countries, it is nothing but a fundamentalist model for Turkey.''

PRESIDENT DENKTAS TO ADDRESS TURKISH PARLIAMENT
President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will address the Turkish parliament later today. Earlier, Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc invited President Denktas to address the parliament. In response, President Denktas said that he wanted to deliver a final speech at the Turkish parliament about the Cyprus issue.

TALKS AT PARLIAMENTARY JUSTICE SUB-COMMISSION INTERRUPTED
When ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and opposing Republican People's Party (CHP) deputies failed to reach a compromise on the ''crime of sharia'', talks at the Parliamentary Justice Sub-Commission over the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK) draft have been interrupted.

SEZER: ''DECISIONS WILL ALSO AFFECT NEXT GENERATIONS''
Speaking at a conference at the War Academies, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has referred to the Cyprus issue, saying, ''the sides in Cyprus are standing on the point of making a critical decision. We cannot ignore the importance of the current stage and the heavy responsibility it brought forth. Decisions to be made and steps to be taken will not affect only our generation, but also the next generations in an unreturnable way. Therefore, we should consider skeptical and critical approaches to the plan naturally. We should remember that the plan was improved several times as a result of these criticisms and suspicions.''

''This Country Belongs To Us Platform'' formed by political parties, trade unions and non-governmental organizations in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has organized a rally in favor of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan. Nearly 15 thousand people attended the rally by carrying blue-and-white balloons and the newly-designed tricolor flags of the United Republic of Cyprus in their hands, and chanting slogans saying, ''yes to the Annan Plan, yes to the world, ''peace cannot be prevented in Cyprus'' and ''naturally yes''. The platform called on both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot peoples to cast their votes in favor of the plan in the referendum to be held on April 24, 2004.

MILITARY FACILITIES TO SERVE PEOPLE
National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul has said that inactive military hospitals and repair facilities would be open to use of people. Gonul said, ''civilian people will be able to benefit from the military hospitals and repair facilities working with a low capacity.''

HARSH REACTION TO ATTEMPTS TO POSTPONE REFERENDUM IN CYPRUS
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on all relevant sides to fulfil their responsibilities stemming from United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan. The ministry reached harshly to attempt to postpone the referendum which was scheduled to be held in the island on April 24.

ANY EXCUSE LEFT
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer has cancelled his weekly meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Earlier, Prime Minister Erdogan said that he could not attend the session at the Parliamentary General Assembly in which President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will address deputies, due to his appointment with President Sezer. Now, Prime Minister Erdogan does not have any excuse.

''EMBARGOES ON TURKISH CYPRIOTS WILL BE LIFTED''
A high-level U.S. official has said that the if the Greek Cypriot side said 'no' to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan in the referendum to be held on April 24, they would consider lifting embargoes imposed on the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Meanwhile, another U.S. official said in an interview with the Greek To Vima Newspaper that the Greek Cypriot side, which had been asking the United Nations to find a solution to the Cyprus issue for 30 years, put forward excuses now.

AK PARTY DEPUTIES BOYCOTT PRESIDENT DENKTAS OF TRNC
President Rauf Denktas of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will address the Turkish parliament later today. While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he could not listen to President Denktas due to his weekly meeting with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the Presidential Office stated that the meeting between President Sezer and Prime Minister Erdogan would not be held because of President Sezer's program in Istanbul. A number of AK Party deputies will not attend the session at the parliament to attend the party meeting in Antalya. AK Party deputies' departure for Antalya one day earlier gave rise to comments that the AK Party boycotted President Denktas. Meanwhile, opposing Republican People's Party (CHP) will attend the session with its leader and all other members.

''MOTHER, SAY 'YES' FOR ME''
''This Country Belongs To Us Platform'' formed by political parties, trade unions and non-governmental organizations has organized a rally in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in favor of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan. Thousands of people attended the rally. Some trade unions went on one-day general strike in order to increase number of participants in the rally. Speaking at the rally on behalf of the platform, TRNC Dev-Is Labor Union Chairman Ali Gulle said, ''Turkish Cypriot people are determined to reach peace this time. We will not return from our way.''

''EU SHOULD PUT PRESSURE ON GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE''
Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has said that they would not accept any attempt to postpone the referendum in Cyprus which was scheduled to be held on April 24. He said, ''Cyprus will become a full member of the European Union (EU) as of May 1. However, only the Greek Cypriot side will represent Cyprus in the EU. This is unacceptable. The EU should put the same pressure on the Greek Cypriot side.''

ISLAM CONSOLIDATES DEMOCRACY CULTURE
The Democracy Congress of Islam Countries in Istanbul has ended. A joint declaration was released at the end of the congress held with the participation of heads of state and government, and representatives of political parties and non-governmental organizations from Islam countries. Stressing that the Islam was the faith of peace and tolerance, the final declaration added that the Islam consolidated democracy culture.
