WE ARE PARLIAMENT'S ARMY AND ATATURK'S SOLDIERS
Turkish Chief of General Staff Hilmi Ozkok expressed view of Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on two issues: ''We are parliament's army and Ataturk's soldiers.'' Ozkok held a press conference yesterday and expressed his views on some issues, particularly Cyprus issue. Ozkok said, ''there are positive and negative sides of (United Nations Secretary General Kofi) Annan's plan. We can't say 'yes' or 'no' to it. It is Turkish Cypriot people and Turkish parliament who will decide on this issue. We believe they will take the best decision.'' Ozkok said, ''we can never make concessions of principle of secularism, legal and democratic structure and territorial integrity of Turkey. We are determined to protect all these principles till the very end.''

BUSINESS WORLD'S ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ''YES'' TO U.N. PLAN
Leading organizations of the business world made a common announcement in newspapers saying that people should say ''yes'' to the United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan in the simultaneous referenda to be held in Cyprus on April 24. The announcement said, ''politician and economic priorities of Turkey and Turkish Cypriot people necessitate solution in the island and European Union (EU) membership. Solution has never been so close in Cyprus.''

''WE ARE VERY FURIOUS ABOUT EFFORTS TO DELAY SIMULTANEOUS REFERENDA''
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat could not convince AKEL, the biggest political party of the Greek Cypriots which joined those who would vote ''no'' to the United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan.

WE CAN'T ASSUME ATTITUDE TOWARDS EVERY ISSUE
Turkish Chief of General Staff Hilmi Ozkok said, ''Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) should not be expected to assume attitude towards every issue.'' Ozkok said that it would not be appropriate for him to say ''yes'' or ''no'' to the United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan which would be voted in simultaneous referenda in the island on April 24.

''IT'S YOUR CHOICE''
Kemal Dervis, who joined the Republican People's Party (CHP) two years ago saying that ''he had contentment and there was similarity of perspective between himself and CHP'', resigned from all his positions in the CHP. Nobody asked him to stay in his positions in the CHP.

DENKTAS TO SPEAK, ERDOGAN NOT TO LISTEN
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he would not listen to speech that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas, whom he warned that ''he should explain what he wanted to explain in Cyprus'' would make at the Turkish parliament. Erdogan said, ''I have an appointment with President (Ahmet Necdet) Sezer. Therefore, I can't join the parliamentary session in which Denktas will deliver his speech.''

FIRST VISIT TO GREEK CYPRIOTS
A Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) prime minister proceeded to Greek Cypriot side for the first time. TRNC Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat met with Dimitris Hristofyas, the secretary general of communist party AKEL and speaker of the Greek Cypriot parliament, and said that referendum should not be delayed, adding that Greek Cypriots could say yes to Annan Plan with contentment.

EU: REFERENDUM DEMAND BELONGS TO GOVERNMENTS
Following the demand for a second referendum, the European Union (EU) Commission stated that as referendum was a national case, the related governments would take decision about it and announced that the process and evaluations about referendum in Cyprus was under the control of the United Nations.

ERDOGAN: IF JAPAN MAKES INVESTMENT, DEFICIT WILL BE OVERCOME
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the trade volume deficit between Japan and Turkey was against Turkey and he called Japanese businessmen to make more investments in Turkey.

Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Parliamentarian Kemal Dervis, who said that he wanted to work more freely and be productive, resigned as CHP Central Executive Board member and vice chairman.

ANNAN: REFERENDUM CAN BE DELAYED
The United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan said that if one of the sides in Cyprus said no in the referendum, Greek Cypriots would enter to the European Union (EU) alone. He said that if Turkish and Greek Cypriots demanded the postponement of referendum with the support of Greece and Turkey, they could think about it, but there was no such demand.

CYPRUS MESSAGES FROM OZKOK
Turkish Chief of General Staff Hilmi Ozkok put an end to all speculations and frankly said, ''bi-zonality, guarantee and political equality have been ensured in Cyprus. We have expressed our views to the Turkish government. Now, it is Turkish Cypriot people and the parliament who will express their views.'' Ozkok said, ''Cyprus continues to have a strategic importance. European Union's (EU) decision to accept application of Greek Cypriot side as an EU member, a move which violates the Treaty of Guarantee, can't be prevented. Two different points of views have occurred in a national cause for the first time and this difference of opinion has been reflected to Turkey.'' Ozkok noted, ''what is important from now on is to provide Turkish Cypriot people with the suitable atmosphere in which they can make the best decision for themselves with their free will and without any pressure in the simultaneous referenda to be held in the island. We have full belief that Turkish Cypriot people and Turkish parliament will take the best decision.''

YANAL APPOINTED COACH OF TURKISH NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
Turkish National Football Association Chairman Haluk Ulusoy announced that the Association signed a four-year contract with Ersun Yanal to coach the Turkish national football team. The target is the 2006 World Cup.

CYPRUS TRAIN LEAVES
Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Hilmi Ozkok held a press conference yesterday at General Staff Headquarters and he explained the view of Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on Cyprus issue. Stressing that the importance of Cyprus depended on two basic elements for General Staff, Gen. Ozkok said the first one was the security of Turkish Cypriot kinsmen and the second one was the strategical importance of Cyprus for Turkey.

TALAT: SAY YES
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat held meetings with Greek Cypriot political parties to make results of referendum in Greek Cypriot side ''yes''. Talat, who is the first TRNC Prime Minister visiting Greek Cypriot side, met with Dimitris Hristofyas, the secretary general of communist party AKEL and speaker of the Greek Cypriot parliament, and with Greek Cypriot main opposition party DISI leader Nicos Anastasiades. Hristofyas said after the meeting that the referendum should be delayed for two sides' saying yes. Anastasiades said that the delay of referendum was impossible.

STATE PROMISES TO GIVE DOUBLE SALARY, HOWEVER DOCTORS DON'T GO TO EAST
Turkish Health Ministry announced that doctors who would work in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions would be paid 3 billion Turkish liras (TL) of salary. Despite this high salary, only 177 of 940 doctors have applied to the Turkish Health Ministry to go to these regions of Turkey.

IRAQI CHILDREN TO FEEL HAPPY ON APRIL 23 CHILDREN'S DAY
April 23 International Children's Day, which was celebrated unlively last year due to Iraq War, will be more interesting this year by children coming from 30 different countries. Iraqi children will also come to Turkey for the Children's Day. Iraqi children, who are still overshadowed by the weapons although the war ended in their country, will wear their traditional clothes and perform their folkloric dances and shows like the other participants. Iraqi children, who will visit historical places in Turkey, will have the opportunity to be away from trouble in their country for a short time. Officials say that participation of Iraqi children in Children's Day celebrations will make April 23 more meaningful for world peace.
