European Commission Congratulates President Gul Over His Election

BRUSSELS - European Union Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso congratulated Abdullah Gul over his election as Turkey's 11th President, saying that Gul's election might add a new momentum to Turkish-EU relations.
Gul's election and the new government may present an opportunity for fresh, positive and swift progress in Turkey's membership negotiations with the EU, Barroso said in a statement on Tuesday.
