TOKYO/ANKARA - Turkish State Minister Ali Babacan met with Japanese Finance Minister Osaka Sadakazu Tanigaki and other economy officials under Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's official visit to Japan.
Sources said on Tuesday that Babacan met with Tanigaki and his aide for international affairs Zembei Mizoguchi the day before and he informed them on ongoing economic program, structural reform process, relations with the European Union (EU) and latest developments about macroeconomic figures. Babacan also expressed his gratitude to the Japanese government for its aid to Turkey after devastating earthquake in 1999.
At the meeting, Tanigaki said they appreciated the progress that the Turkish government recorded in short period in its economic and structural reform program. Tanigaki said they also appreciated the progress that Turkey recorded in its partnership relations with the EU.
Meanwhile, Babacan said that EU's values were universal and Turkey expected good news from the EU about it's setting a date for opening of entry talks at the end of the year.
Sources said that following the meeting, Babacan met with high-level representatives of leading Japanese banks and finance organizations.
At the meeting, Babacan made a presentation in detail about the ongoing economic program and initiatives for improvement of investment environment in Turkey and answered questions.
Nearly twenty-five representatives from Nomura Securities, Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, UFJ Bank Daiwa, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Japanese rating organization JCR and other insurance and economic research institutions attended the meeting.
Babacan later visited Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) Governor Shinozawa together with Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim. Sources said that information on the economic program in Turkey was given and exchange of opinions was made on ongoing projects like Istanbul Strait Tube Tunnel and projects like third bridge in Istanbul Strait and rehabilitation of railways in which Turkey and Japan might cooperate in the future.
Meanwhile, sources said that Babacan attended a seminar on ''Turkish Economy, Latest Developments and Investment Opportunities'' organized jointly by the Japan Overseas Institution. Seventy people including representatives of leading Japanese industrial companies attended the seminar.
