ANKARA - United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan expected all parties to give him written commitment till April 9 after he presented his final Cyprus plan to the parties, diplomatic sources said on Thursday.
Diplomatic sources said that Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides, three guarantor powers Turkey, Greece and Britain should present their written commitment to the U.N. till April 9.
Two sides in the island should commit that ''they would put the plan to referendum'' while the guarantor powers should commit that ''they consented to putting the plan to referendum and they would present the plan to their national parliaments for ratification in case positive result came out of simultaneous referenda in the island'', the same sources noted.
The same sources stated that Annan wanted parties to make those commitments at the end of the negotiations which were completed late on Wednesday while he decided the parties to express their commitments in written as the Greek Cypriot side and Greece did not want to sign any document at the end of the negotiation process in Switzerland.
Therefore, two sides in the island and guarantor powers were asked to express their commitment in written till April 9 under the compromise reached in New York talks that were held in February.
Annan presented his final plan to parties late on Wednesday after four-party Cyprus negotiations ended among delegations from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Greek Cypriot side, Turkey and Greece.
Turkish delegation was headed by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Greek delegation was headed by Greek Prime Minister Costas Caramanlis.
Erdogan and Caramanlis joined the negotiations on Monday. Delegations from TRNC, Greek Cypriot side, Turkey and Greece were holding negotiations in Buergenstock resort of Switzerland since March 24.
TRNC and Greek Cypriot side started Cyprus negotiations in the island on February 19 in order to find a fair and lasting solution to Cyprus issue till May 1 on the basis of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan.
According to the Cyprus negotiation road map, two sides were expected to attend a quartet conference together with guarantor powers Turkey and Greece after March 22 to discuss issues on which they could not reach any compromise in their negotiations held in the island.
The plan will be put to simultaneous referendum in the island on April 24.
