Parliament Speaker Arinc Receives Undep Permanent Representative In Turkey Simonse And Cedaw Chairperson Acar

ANKARA - Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc has received United Nations Development Program (UNDEP) Permanent Representative in Turkey Jakob Simonse and United Nations Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Chairperson Prof. Dr. Feride Acar.
Speaking at the meeting, Simonse said on Wednesday that Turkish women were granted suffrage earlier than women in many countries.
Recalling that Turkey had expended serious efforts under the CEDAW and highlighting importance of Turkey's membership to the Committee in regard to the United Nations, Simonse said that A Turkish woman's acting as chairperson of CEDAW was the sign of it.
Simonse added that they printed the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women as a book to be distributed to MPs.
Meanwhile, CEDAW Chairperson Prof. Dr. Acar described the convention as the ''Constitution of Human Rights of Women''.
''The convention underlines rights of women as human beings. Unfortunately, these rights are violated many times since they are women. Countries, which signed the convention, put into practice principles of the convention both in their laws and in their daily lives,'' she added.
