Turkey Signs European Convention On Fight Against Corruption

STRASBOURG - Turkey has signed the European Convention on Fight against Corruption.
Turkish Permanent Envoy to the Council of Europe Deryal Batibay presented the documents about approval of the convention by Turkey to Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer on Monday.
The European Convention on Fight against Corruption is a comprehensive legal document envisaging influential international co-operation and solidarity in fight against corruption.
The Group of States Against Corruption (GREKO), which was established under the structure of the Council of Europe, started preparatory works in 1999 on the convention comprising international measures taken against corruption.
The convention includes comprehensive definitions about elements of the offenses of active and passive corruption.
Comprising international measures to prevent these offenses, the convention highlights importance of international exchange of information, facilitation of extradition of criminals and withdrawal of immunity.
The convention requests the states to impose deterrent punishments to prevent the offenses of active and passive corruption.
