ANKARA - "The process after the general elections is clear. We will hold talks and make assessments. There is no need to rush," Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said on Wednesday.
Holding a news conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gul said, "the process after the general elections is clear. This process should be completed maturely in line with our people's will. In this period, all political parties will make their own assessments."
Gul stated that the elections once again proved that the Turkish nation held onto its institutional democracy and that democracy had emerged much more powerful from the polls. Foreign Minister also added that Justice and Development (AK) Party won a landslide victory in the elections, getting one of every two votes.
AK Party won 340 seats in parliament in the elections, receiving 46.6 percent of total votes to become the first political party in Turkey in more than 50 years to increase its support in the second consecutive term of rule.
"This is a vote of confidence that the nation has given to our government's performance over the last four and a half years and we are the single political party to receive votes from all over the country," Gul told reporters.
Gul also underlined that the democracy was served very well in the elections, which he said was a source of honor and respect.
"Our success has put a great responsibility on our shoulders of which we are well aware," Gul added.
Upon a question about presidential election, Gul said, "I cannot ignore what our people have pointed. Also, I cannot ignore our people's will. However, all of these should be completed maturely and constructively in a way which will further strengthen our country and our people."
"I believe that general elections have further strengthened democracy in Turkey," Gul added.
