BAGHDAD - As people across the United States celebrated their country's independence on Wednesday, another US soldier was killed in fierce fighting in Iraq, the military said.
The soldier died while conducting combat operations in southern Baghdad, where US-led forces are clearing streets of militants as part of a four-month-old Baghdad security plan, the military said.
The latest death takes the military's losses in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to 3,579, according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures.
