Ottoman Era Jewish Costumes To Be Displayed In New York

NEW YORK - The exhibition of Jewish costumes during the Ottoman Empire era will be opened in New York, the United States, on March 31, 2004.
The exhibition entitled, ''The Sephardim and The Turks: Living Together for 500 Centuries'' will be opened in New York's Center for Jewish History.
Turkish Consul General in New York Omer Onhon, Prof. Aron Rodrigue from the Stanford University and New York Museum Curator Vivian B.Mann are expected to attend opening of the exhibition displaying a selection of illustrations depicting traditional Jewish attire during the time of the Ottoman Empire.
Silvyo Ovadya, the curator of the exhibition, said on Tuesday that he had been collecting books and postcards about Jewish people living in the Ottoman Empire, since the beginning of 1980s.
The exhibition displays costumes organized by region and period. It is a part of an ongoing program to highlight the cultures, artworks, histories and achievements of Turkish and Jewish peoples living side by side for centuries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jewish Assael Foundation are supporting the exhibition organized jointly by the American Sephardic Federation and the Turkish Consulate General in New York.
The exhibition will remain open till May 7, 2004.
