ISTANBUL - A memorial service took place at British Consulate General in Istanbul on Wednesday for those who lost their lives in the suicide attack on November 20, 2003.
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler and Victoria Short, the wife of British Consul General in Istanbul Roger Short, who also died in the attack, British Ambassador to Turkey Peter Westmacott, Acting British Consul General in Istanbul David Fitton, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkish Chief Rabbi Ishak Haleva, Greek-Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew, Turkish Armenian Patriarch Mesrob II, representatives of other consulates in Istanbul, and relatives of victims of terrorist attack attended the memorial service.
Participants laid white carnations to the monument on which names of the victims were written.
The road in front of the consulate building was closed to the traffic during the memorial service, and tight security measures were taken.
The memorial service at the consulate had originally been scheduled to take place last month but was canceled due to heavy snowstorm.
The attack was one of four suicide bombings in Istanbul in November that killed a total of 63 people.
