Chief Judge Of Constitutional Court To Retire On Tuesday

ANKARA - Tulay Tugcu, the chief judge of the Constitutional Court, will retire on Tuesday.
Tugcu, the first female chief of the court, has been in this office since July 25th, 2005.
After Tugcu retires, the new chairperson of the court will be elected. The chief judge of the Constitutional Court is elected among 11 permanent members of the court. The candidate who wins votes of six members in a secret ballot becomes the new chairperson of the court for four years. However, they resign when they reach the retirement age limit even if they do not complete the four-year term.
Tugcu was born in Ankara on June 12th, 1942. Graduating from Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1961, Tugcu worked as a lawyer till 1965 and started to work in the Council of State in 1969.
She was elected a member of the Council of State in 1992, and nominated as a member of the Constitutional Court on December 22nd, 1999.
