LEFKOSA - Peace and Democracy Movement (BDH) leader Mustafa Akinci met on Monday with Thomas Weston, the special coordinator of the U.S. State Department for Cyprus.
Akinci, who made a statement after meeting with Thomas Weston, the special coordinator of the U.S. State Department for Cyprus, said Cyprus question should be solved any more.
Akinci said, ''let us leave future to next generations,'' and noted that the United States would make an important commitment for finance of solution of Cyprus question.
Akinci said Weston stressed that a very serious meeting would take place on this issue, and that OECD and EU countries, and many other countries including Japan and Gulf countries would be invited to this meeting.
Akinci stressed that Weston said the United States would make a very important commitment there. ''I got the message that a very serious commitment would be given. I am very pleased over this because solution would definitely require an important finance in practice. Particularly at a time when we will resort to referendum.''
When a journalist reminded Akinci that Weston warned the two sides on Cyprus that there would be a very big problem in case the result becomes a ''no'' from the referendums, and asked whether or not this was a right statement as the talks continued, he said, ''everybody knows that separate referendums will take place in the end. There is an agreement in this respect. As a politician, I am warning everybody. It is not the time to say 'no' in a referendum. We can only reach possible, not the ideal. Annan plan includes what is possible. We should not expect for radical changes in favor of us. This is our position from the beginning. As the BDH, we are pleased that Secretary General preserves the position. Now that they are in a tunnel which does not have a back door and urgent exit. We expect that the tunnel will not collapse. This is the way to solve Cyprus question. If the negotiations had been without time limit, they would have continued for another five years.''
