BERLIN - Turkey is not `European` and it should not become a full member of the European Union, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
In an interview with the German monthly review "Cicero", Sarkozy indicated that just meeting the EU criteria does not solve the problem.
Sarkozy remarked that he believes Turkey should not enter the EU since it is not `European`. He further indicated that staying out of the EU should not push Turkey away from Europe.
According to Sarkozy, relations with Turkey may continue under a privileged partnership scheme.
"We can go further and establish a union with Mediterranean countries", told Sarkozy. He added that Turkey can be a prominent member of such a union.
