ANKARA - Turkish Prime Minister`s Office submitted a motion to Parliament asking to extend the mandate of Turkish troops under the banner of UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for one more year.
The motion reminds that Turkish troops were allowed to stay for one year in Lebanon by the UNSCR #1701 (dated August 11th, 2006) and Turkish Parliament`s decision taken on September 5th, 2006.
The motion states that Turkey undertook an important peace-making role and contributed to land and naval operations assumed by UNIFIL .
UN has launched initiatives to extend UNIFIL`s mandate which will end on August 31st, 2007.
The motion stated that Turkish soldiers` mandate will expire on September 5th, 2007, and asked the Parliament to extend it for one more year.
