ANKARA - U.S. Ambassador in Ankara Ross Wilson stated on Monday that the two U.S. warplanes` violation of Turkish airspace was an "accident", adding that "they considered the matter closed".
Wilson replied questions prior to the dinner hosted by Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group chairman Egemen Bagis in honor of the members of the U.S. Congressional Study Group on Turkey who are currently in Turkey.
Wilson said that an investigation on the issue revealed that the incident was caused due to pilot`s error.
During a course of training mission in the northern half of Iraq, the pilot misunderstood where the border was, Wilson noted.
Underscoring that they also discussed the issue with Deputy Chief of Turkish General Staff Gen. Ergin Saygun today , Wilson said that it was an accident; and he knows the matter is being investigated. He added that what the consequences would be is up to the U.S. Air Forces to determine.
