ANKARA - Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that the necessary steps regarding the U.S. warplanes` violation of Turkish airspace near Iraqi border, will be assessed after the technical information arrives from the Turkish General Staff.
Two U.S. warplanes violated for a short period of time Turkish airspace near Iraqi border last week, the Turkish General Staff said in a report posted on its website on Sunday.
Sources at the MFA told AA that there is a violation as the General Staff said in its statement, adding the Ministry is expecting a report from the General Staff HQ.
Necessary steps will be taken as soon as the report arrives, said the sources adding they expect it on Monday (today).
Underscoring the importance of technical details like how the violation happened and the duration, the sources stated that "after the technical information is gathered, the normal procedure for such situations will be implemented."
On the other hand a U.S. Embassy official at Ankara told AA that they have been informed that a violation has occurred, adding "it appears to have been an accidental incursion in the (Turkish) airspace."
The official told that investigation is continuing and the appropriate action will be taken once the procedures are complete.
