ANKARA - The Turkish parliament convened on Monday to debate in second reading the constitutional amendment regarding presidential and parliamentary elections.
The amendment was vetoed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer last week.
The amendment envisages that general elections will be held once in every four years; allows election of the president by popular vote; lowers the presidential term from the current seven years to five; allows the president to stand for re-election for a second term; and requires a quorum of at least one third of total number of MPs for parliamentary sessions.
