SAMSUN - "Unfortunately, Turkey`s special representation mechanism for countering terrorism could not yield a tangible result so far," Republican People`s Party (CHP) Chairman Deniz Baykal said on Tuesday.
Asked to comment on the dismissal of Ret. Gen. Edip Baser (Turkey`s special envoy for countering terrorism) from office, Baykal said, "what actually concerns us is that no tangible results could be obtained in fight against terrorism."
"Turkey suffered a lot from terrorism, and continues to suffer. No new, effective and serious measures were taken. Terrorism continues to claim lives and shed blood. No stance has been assumed to stop this," Baykal noted.
Underscoring that northern Iraq has become a terror base where attacks were launched from against Turkey, and that the terrorists get logistic support, Baykal said, "putting an end to this is a pre-requisite of the international law. The United States is an influencial power in Iraq. There is an administration there but that continues to support terrorism. We believe that this problem must be settled without recurring to arms. All related countries should fulfill their responsibilities."
