ANKARA - "Cooperation in the Mediterranean and Europe (EU) are two different things," Turkish FM Abdullah Gul said on Thursday when commenting on newly elected French President Nicholas Sarkozy`s "Mediterranean union instead of EU" proposal to Turkey.
Turkey is a country that has launched (accession) negotiations with the EU in line with the decision of all member states, Gul told reporters after meeting doctors from Mosul who are actually in Turkey for vocational training.
Gul noted that Turkey expects all EU member states to be loyal to their commitments.
"Naturally, there may be some internal political developments in some member states but they should not be related with (our) negotiation process," he stated.
Gul said that the member states and Turkey will make a decision (about Turkey`s membership) at the end of the negotiation process.
"However, putting forth an obstacle before negotiation process means acting contrary to promises, and I do not think it would happen," he added.
