ANKARA - "Turkey should do what is necessary in Iraq, if possible in cooperation with the United States. An alliance is not a pre-requisite for intervention in north of Iraq. Turkey may solve the problem alone, but this may pave the way for complication in the future," Ret. Gen. Edip Baser, Turkey`s special envoy for countering terrorism said on Wednesday.
Taking the floor at a conference on "Turkey`s Domestic Security Problems", Baser said it would not be right to separate national security as internal and external during globalization process, indicating that plans should be prepared against all kinds of threats.
"Elements like education, health, justice and security are closely connected to national security problem," said Baser and added that, "using religion as a means of politics poses a threat against national unity and domestic tranquility," he said.
Commenting on international terrorism problem, Baser said socio-economic problems like hunger, unemployment, and educational problems are the reasons of global threats.
Asked to comment on any probable intervention of Turkey on north of Iraq, Baser said Turkey has the right to take all kinds of measures to protect its national interests.
Baser said total eradication of the PKK shelters in north of Iraq may take place at a future stage.
