PARIS - British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Friday he agreed with French president-elect Nicolas Sarkozy's plan for a simplified version of the European constitutional treaty.
"I agree with that, yes, definitely," he told AFP in French, following an hour-and-a-half meeting with Sarkozy in Paris.
Plans for an EU constitution have been in limbo ever since a draft version was rejected by the French and Dutch in referenda in 2005.
Sarkozy has proposed a "mini-treaty" assembling the most practical parts of the original draft, instead of a full-fledged constitution, a plan he claims has the support of the Spanish and German governments.
The right-winger, who formally takes over as French president next week following his election victory on Sunday, has ruled out holding another referendum on the document.
Blair has said several times he would support a "modified, traditional" treaty rather than a text comprising the main elements of a constitution.
