LOS ANGELES - One person was killed and two others wounded after a college student opened fire at a campus apartment complex in northern California, police said Tuesday.
The shooting incident took place late Monday near the campus of California State University in Fresno, 219 miles (352 kilometres) northeast of Los Angeles.
The gunman, identified by local media as a 19-year-old criminology student, was holed up inside the apartment early Tuesday with police negotiators attempting to end the stand-off.
A Fresno Police Department spokesman said the shootings took place around 11:30 pm local time Monday (0630 GMT Tuesday).
California State University Campus Police said in a statement that the campus was open and Tuesday classes would be conducted on schedule.
"The Fresno police department has indicated that campus is safe for classes," the statement said.
Local media reports said the dead person was a 19-year-old former student at the college. The two other victims, aged 19 and 22, were released from hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds.
One report said the incident occurred after an argument erupted over a PlayStation 2 video game console.
The college shooting comes less than a month after South Korean gunman Cho Seung-Hui shot dead 32 people at Virginia Tech University on April 16, the deadliest school shooting in US history.
