NEW YORK - Canadian-based Thomson Corp. confirmed Monday it had made "a preliminary approach" to Reuters Group Plc. "that may or may not lead to an offer" for the British-based financial information giant.
The confirmation came three days after Reuters said it had been approached by an unnamed suitor amid a flurry of new merger activity in the media and information sector.
Thomson, in a statement issued from Stamford, Connecticut, offered no details but added: "A further announcement will be made in due course."
Reuters, best known as a global news and picture agency and headed by US chief executive Tom Glocer, derives most of its revenue from selling financial news and data.
