NEW YORK - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas confirmed on Tuesday that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan would meet with TRNC President Rauf Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos before tripartite Cyprus talks which is expected to take place at 23.00 Turkish local time today.
Serdar Denktas told reporters that TRNC asked for the meeting and that the proposal was conveyed to the Secretary General through Annan's Special Envoy Alvaro de Soto.
Serdar Denktas said Annan would have separate meetings with Denktas and Papadopoulos before the tripartite meeting, noting that later the main meeting among Annan-Denktas-Papadopoulos and De Soto would start.
Serdar Denktas said a six-way meeting was envisaged to take place as a result of this meeting but that this has not been confirmed yet. Representatives from guarantor countries Turkey, Greece and Britain are expected to join this six-way meeting.
