ANKARA - Totally 533,653 tourists visited Turkey in January, 2004 with an increase of 47.3 percent when compared to the same month in 2003.
Culture and Tourism Ministry said on Monday that the number of tourists coming from OECD countries increased by 36 percent, while the increase in tourists coming from East Europe was 57.88 percent.
Germany was ranked the first among the countries which sent the highest number of tourists to Turkey with 120,933 persons. Bulgaria, Russia, Greece, Iran, Azerbaijan, Holland, Britain, France, Ukraine, Syria, Austria, Georgia, the U.S. and Italy followed Germany.
Totally 63.74 percent of the tourists came to Turkey by airplane.
Meanwhile 550,421 Turkish citizens went abroad in January.
