MIRACLE: HE IS PULLED ALIVE FROM RUBBLE 132 HOURS AFTER COLLAPSE
A 15-year-old boy was rescued alive from the rubble of the Zumrut Apartment Building 132 hours after the building had collapsed in central Konya province last Monday. First words of Muhammet, who was uninjured since he was sheltered in a cavity, were, ''you came near me before but then you went away. I am very hungry.'' Muhammet's mother and brother are still trapped under the debris. Chief doctor of the hospital explained how Muhammet endured thirst for six days as, ''as he slept, his body did not used much energy. Normally, a person can endure thirst for three or four days.'' Death toll rose to 75 in the scene of the collapsed building.

DENKTAS GOES SAYING ''NOTHING CAN BE ACHIEVED BY PRESSURE''
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas flew to New York on Sunday to attend Cyprus talks to start on Tuesday. Denktas expressed uneasiness about pressure and said, ''we don't accept pressure. Nothing can be achieved by pressure. We can reach somewhere with compromise of two sides.'' In the letter he will send to United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed objection of Turkish side to U.N. Special Envoy to Cyprus De Soto without mentioning his name.

''I WON'T HOLD THIS FUNERAL''
TRNC President Rauf Denktas who will present a letter of objection to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said, ''it means 'Turkish Cypriot is dead' if he does not allow negotiations. I won't hold the funeral.'' Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan telephoned Denktas who was about to step aboard plane to New York and wished him a 'good trip'. But Denktas said their trip was not so 'good' because Annan tied their hands and he invited them for a fait accompli, not for negotiation. Denktas who will give Annan a letter of objection as soon as he arrives in New York told his close friends, ''we will return if he dos not accept my letter. There is nothing to do.'' Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot side leader Tassos Papadopoulos can also give a similar letter to Annan. Because they are also against pre-conditions and attitude that is not open to negotiate. Meanwhile, the method of Annan will be as follows: He will not accept objections of leaders. If they insist, he will say ''bye bye''. If one leader accepts, he will announce the other as intransigent. And he will let the United States be a part of the issue for the last time.

WE WIN TEN CUTE LITTLE HEARTS
In addition to bomb and extreme poverty in Iraq, these ten children have cardiac problem. They are between 2.5 and 10 years old. They couldn't find either doctor or medicine in Iraq. Upon the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they were brought to Istanbul from Iraq. They will undergo heart surgery one by one beginning today.

REPROACH FROM UNDER RUBBLE
15-year-old Muhammet Kalem was pulled from the rubble alive 132 hours after the eleven-storey building collapsed in Konya. Under the rubble, he called out to rescue workers, ''my brothers, you were very close to me. I kept hearing your voices. But you couldn't hear and find me.'' A worker saw a hose moving and when he pulled it he understood that there is someone at the other end of the hose. Later, they heard Muhammet asking for help. The boy said, ''save me, my brothers. I am very hungry. I want bread and water. What day is today?'' He is in good condition.

GUL: TOMORROW WILL BE LATE FOR CYPRUS
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul warned before the summit that if a solution was not found to Cyprus issue today, tomorrow would be more problematic. Gul told Sabah en route to Poland that Turkey could behave differently if it knew that Cyprus issue would develop in Turkey's favor in two or three years. ''However, it is not so,'' Gul said. And Gul went on saying, ''if this issue isn't solved and has an impasse today, a bigger problem will occur tomorrow. A problematic situation for Turkish Cypriots will also occur. Also, we follow a national policy.''

THIS IS ''KOREAN PEACE''
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who went to South Korea by a group comprised of 83 businessmen, signed a giant investment agreement with Daewoo on the first day of his visit. Erdogan announced the aim of his visit to South Korea as attracting investors to Turkey and increasing trade volume between two countries. Erdogan held his first meeting with Daewoo in Seoul. Erdogan stated that friendship established between Turkey and South Korea after Korean War should not be shelved. Upon Daewoo's promise to produce heavy work machines in Turkey, Erdogan promised to provide Daewoo with every kind of facility.

FEBRUARY 28 MEETING
Trade unions, non-governmental organizations and political parties are making their attitude towards Justice and Development Party (AK Party) severer. Unions and non-governmental organizations including DISK, KESK, TMMOB, Turk-Is, TTB, ADD and Kamu-Sen decided to stage a joint demonstration against the public management bill on February 28. Unions and non-governmental organizations will stage demonstrations in northern Samsun, southern Adana and southeastern Diyarbakir provinces on February 21 and in Istanbul on February 22. These organizations continue talks with the Republican People's Party (CHP) about participation in demonstrations. A big demonstration will be staged in Ankara on February 28.

IRISH AMBASSADOR WHELAN: ''CYPRUS IS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM''
European Union (EU) Term President Ireland's Ambassador to Turkey Whelan told Cumhuriyet that Turkey's getting a date from EU to start full membership negotiations did not only depend on Cyprus issue. Whelan said that the key issue was implementation of reforms. Whelan stressed that insolubility in Cyprus would increase chance of circles against Turkey.

CEM KARACA BIDS FAREWELL
Cem Karaca, a famous Turkish singer whose music is loved by everybody and who is always discussed for his political stance, died yesterday of heart and respiratory insufficiency. 59-year-old Cem Karaca will be laid to rest today.

Turkey, which had days reminding spring last week, will be under influence of cold weather coming from the Balkans as of today. Rain is expected today while it will be snowy tomorrow. Temperature will decrease by 10-12 degrees Celsius.

While hopes dimmed in Konya, 16-year-old boy Muhammet Kalem said 'hello' to life again. 5.5 days after collapse of the building which took lives of many people, Kalem was rescued, making happy not only his relatives, but also all Turkish people.

ERDOGAN CHALLENGES
Speaking to reporters on board during his flight to Seoul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the opposition parties about the elections. ''I don't like to talk with statistics but I do believe that we will win almost fifty percent vote that is much above the votes we got in November 3 general elections.''

''WE ARE GOING WITH GOOD INTENTION''
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Rauf Denktas said, ''I do not give in to pressure. How nice if we agree... I hope we would return with the good news.''

''WE WANT SOLUTION''
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, ''Denktas went to the United States for a lasting and radical solution. We have done our best.''

''BURY ME WITH PRAYERS''
59-year-old famous singer Cem Karaca died of cardiac insufficiency. In his last request, Karaca wanted to be buried with prayers, not with applause.

DENKTAS CALLS FOR ''COMPROMISE, NOT IMPOSITION''
Historical New York talks which are of critical importance for solution to the Cyprus issue are going to start tomorrow. TRNC President Rauf Denktas who went to the United States upon U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's invitation opposed to any imposition by saying that solution would be reached with consent of both sides, not by imposition. ''We will try to do the best for our people. Solution is a concrete, lasting and fair agreement that satisfies both sides. And it depends on will and steps of both sides.'' Denktas stressed that they went to New York with good will despite everything.
