Baykal On Presidential Election

ANKARA - "In case the Constitutional Court decides that a quorum of 367 MPs was not necessary to inaugurate the session for first round of presidential election, it would drag Turkey into a very dangerous quarrel," Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Deniz Baykal said on Monday commenting on presidential election process.
Speaking at a news conference in CHP HQ in Ankara, Baykal said, "early elections can not resolve the crisis in the country alone, but bring an opportunity to get out the crisis. It is the Turkish people that will utilize this chance."
"Maybe for the first time after a long period, constitutional institutions of the country felt the need to share and express their concerns and complaints over the future of the country," he added.
Baykal defended the 4.5-year performance of Justice & Development Party (AKP) could not eliminate the concerns towards itself, furthermore "deepened" them.
"Stance of the government pertaining to the acquisitions of the Republic failed to inspire confidence in people and the constitutional institutions," Baykal said.

-DECISION OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT-
Baykal underscored that CHP, being the main opposition party, endeavored to elect the president from the parliament in cooperation and congruity. "At the current situation, we insist on holding early elections prior to presidential election. This view is uttered by all segments of the society today," Baykal said.
