KONYA - The total business volume of Turkish contractors has reached USD 12.7 billion in 2006, after they began working on 324 projects in 25 different countries, said sources on Monday.
According to a report prepared by the Konya Chamber of Commerce, the contracting and construction sector in Turkey is perceived to be the engine of the economy.
The projects assumed by Turkish contractors constitutes 3 percent of the global construction market. Turkey's construction industry has a direct impact on 400 sub-industries as well.
The 3,600 projects realized by Turkish contractors between 1970 and 2005 in 63 separate countries have generated a business volume of USD 85 billion.
The construction sector of Turkey was involved in overseas projects worth USD 12.7 billion last year.
Russia, North Africa, Middle East and Central Asia are the areas where Turkish contractors are most active in. 60 percent of all Turkish contractors work in Russia, Qatar, Kazakhistan and Libya.
