ANKARA - As Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul sought support for his bid for presidency from several opposition parties, True Path leader Mehmet Agar said Thursday that his party has yet to make a decision on whether to participate in the first round of the presidential election scheduled for Friday.
"I would meet my party officials today and with Motherland leader Erkan Mumcu before we make a decision," Agar told reporters following his meeting with Gul.
Support of small opposition parties --including the True Path and the Motherland-- seems crucial as the main opposition Republican People`s Party (CHP) has said it would boycott the election, leaving the ruling Justice & Development Party (AKP) short of a quorum of 367 lawmakers, which some said was a constitutional requirement to go ahead with the first round of the presidential vote.
The CHP also said it would appeal to the Constitutional Court to ask for the cancellation of the election if the AKP go ahead with a vote in the absence of 367 lawmakers on the parliament floor.
"We favor that the ballot box decides for politics, not the courts," Agar said on the other hand.
