ANKARA - Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal congratulated on Tuesday Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy and wished that this be salutary for the country.
Taking the floor at his party's group meeting, Baykal said, "there is an opportunity in front of him to make Turkey peaceful and stable."
"From now Gul must put aside his AKP identity. If he insists to keep it, serious obstacles would come on," Baykal indicated.
Expressing his gratitude and respect to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Baykal said Sezer demonstrated understanding and sensitivity at a time when Turkey was crossing a very delicate period.
Baykal also appreciated Sezer's decisiveness, consistency and courage and said: "many developments that may lead to very big problems in the past could be avoided thanks to the contributions of President Sezer," he added.
Baykal also said history would record Sezer as, "a very distinguished and a very successful president".
