IZMIR - Governor of Aegean city of Izmir Cahit Kirac stated that Izmir had a remarkable tourism potential which should be improved and promoted abroad.
Spanish Ambassador in Ankara Luis Filipe Fernandez De La Pena and Austrian Ambassador in Ankara Heidemaria Gurer visited Kirac at his office in Izmir.
Stressing that they exchanged views with De La Pena on economic, social and cultural issues, Kirac said they briefed the ambassador on Izmir's tourism potential as well.
Emphasizing that they expressed their desire to see more Spanish tourists in the region, Kirac said, "we should carry out activities aiming to improve Izmir's tourism potential".
Meanwhile, De La Pena stated that EU membership process was a long and challenging one and they would keep on supporting Turkey on this matter.
On the other hand, Kirac emphasized that they discussed the necessary steps to be taken in order to improve Austrian-Turkish relations with Ambassador Gurer during the meeting.
Noting that numerous Austrian companies were operating in Izmir, Gurer underscored that Austria supported the excavations in ancient city of Efes (Ephesus) for years.
