Turkey's Halon Bank

ANKARA - Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO) founded Turkey`s Halon Bank to collect and store surplus halon gas, which is known to harm the ozone.
According to the statement by ASO, Halon Bank established by ASO in 1st Industrial Zone in Ankara is aimed at registering the existing halon gases in Turkey, giving courses for alternatives to halon, confinement, storage and processing of the gas as well as selling the gas to institutions that are authorized to use it.
The Halon Bank came into service as of January 2007 and it is is authorized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Bromotrifluoromethane, also known by the trade name Halon 1301, was introduced as an effective gaseous fire suppression agent in the 1960s, and was used around highly valuable materials such as in aircraft, mainframe computer rooms, and telecommunication switching centers, usually in total flooding systems.
The production of halon gas has been banned around the world in 2005 because it is determined to harm the ozone. Although use of the gas has been restricted, it is believed that 93 percent of halon has is currently in storages, that is the reason for foundation of Halon Banks.
Turkey works to eliminate the use of halon incrementally in the framework of the Montreal Protocol. This is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of a number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion.
