BURSA - We have not made a decision among ourselves for a candidate for presidency yet, said Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier Abdullah Gul, on Friday.
Gul met with industrialists, and representatives of several parties and NGOs in in Celik Palas Hotel in northwestern city of Bursa.
FM Gul who answered questions regarding presidential elections said, they have not decided on a name for a candidate for presidency yet. Stressing this is not the decision of one or few people, he added they are consulting MPs and important NGOs in this regard. Gul said he does not know whether the Prime Minister would be a candidate or not, and continued "personal expectations would appear as costs, in terms of political stability. We will wait one more week. We will see what happens," said Gul.
"In the 1980 Constitution, the president has authority and responsibilities that is not in accordance with the parliamentarian system", said Gul commenting on the discussions. He also reminded the elections of the last President, saying the discussions that has taken place then, are incomparable with the discussions and tensions today.
"Even when the president is elected by the people, and he/she gets the votes of the majority, there will not be a complete consensus. The important point is to have more dialogue among political parties and more discussions in the framework of democracy. Whoever becomes the president should show that he/she is the president of everyone, and deal fairly."
