Global Initiative To Prevent Formation Of Deserts: Desire Project"

ANKARA - The "Global Initiative to Prevent Formation of Deserts: Desire Project", funded by the European Union, has began its works in Turkey in order to inform farmers about erosion processes and increase productivity in the agriculture sector.
EU`s project in Turkey is so far its biggest one against the formation of deserts.
According to the DESIRE project, there are 16 spots chosen as possible sites in the world where the soil may turn into a desert. Central Anatolian cities of Eskisehir and Konya`s river-basins are among such sites.
The DESIRE project has been prepared within the EU Sixth Framework Program. This project involves 28 universities, research foundations, non-governmental organizations and commercial groups from all continents. It will continue for a period of five years. Results of the project will be shared with the public through photographs, handbooks, DVDs, and web sites.
