ANKARA - An environmental expert refuted Thursday attempts to threat Turkey with "unbearable economic difficulties" in case of accession to the Kyoto Protocol and warned that buying into such threats would play into the hands of those people who tried to keep the country out of the protocol.
"Turkey must become a party of the protocol with an eye to its national interests to bring its resources, industry, economy and society to sustainable path," Yunus Arikan from Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe said.
Turkish Ministry of Environment and Forestry said last month that becoming a direct party to the Protocol would cause serious financial requirements for Turkey`s economy.
