DOGRAMACI RECEIVES HONORARY DOCTORATE
Former chairman of Turkey`s Higher Education Council (YOK), Prof. Ihsan Dogramaci, received an honorary doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio at his 92th birthday. Dogramaci`s birthday was celebrated at Ankara`s Bilkent Hotel with the participation of Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan and finance ministers and central bank governors from 12 countries, and ambassadors. Dogramaci is set to receive on Thursday another honorary title from the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

KUWAIT PLEDGES TRADE WITH TRNC
Kuwaiti Prime Minister Nasir Al-Muhammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who is in Turkey on an official visit, pledged Wednesday to establish trade ties with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and stated that TRNC could open a trade office in Kuwait. Al-Sabah also said that member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council welcomed cooperation with the TRNC.

TURKISH SIGNATURE IN NORTH OF IRAQ
Turkish contractors have been reconstructing the Kurdish area in the north of Iraq. Turkish signature is everywhere from the satellite cities to universities, airports, bridges and even Barzani`s palace. There are currently 260 Turkish companies operating in Irbil, 225 in Sulaymaniyah, 97 in Dohuk, and 45 in Zaho.

PROSECUTOR PROBES INTO NEWS REPORT ON ALLEGED COUP PLANS
An Istanbul prosecutor launched a preliminary investigation into a news report appeared on Turkish weekly "Nokta" which alleged that a retired general used to take notes about a military coup plan. The prosecutor is said to have started the investigation on March 29th, the day the news report was published. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday urged the judiciary to take legal action against the coup allegations.

ESCAPE FROM KABUL IN A BURKA
Turkish female architect who has been held captive in Kabul for four months wore a burka and managed to escape with the help of U.S. soldiers.
Architect Cigdem Ozkan who was not allowed to leave her house in Kabul with the pretext of a construction, accepted the offer of Americans to help her escape. The escape plan was actualised 12 days ago. Ozkan wore a burka and got on a SUV with the Afghan man pretending to be her husband.
The aim was to go through Pashtun under Taliban control and reach Pakistan. Ozkan who was followed by U.S. soldiers in another SUV reached Pakistan after a fearful journey. Ozkan who took asylum in the Turkish Embassy flew to Istanbul four days later.

GREENLIGHT FROM TOBB
The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey became the first NGO to give consent to PM Erdogan`s possible candidacy for Presidency.

HE (ERDOGAN) CAN BE PM BUT CAN NOT BE PRESIDENT
Leader of the Republican People`s Party (CHP) Deniz Baykal gave an interesting answer to the question "Erdogan became PM, why should he not become the president?"
"We have seen PM Erdogan under the Presidency of a person like Ahmet Necdet Sezer. He is making legislations at the parliament but there is the Constitutional Court. But if he seizes the opportunity, what is going to happen is obvious. If he becomes the President now he will get that opportunity."
"Under, there will be a PM like him and Turkey can not stand such a thing. This can`t happen, Presidency chair is for someone who internalised the democratic, secular outlook of Turkey like Demirel, Ozal," said Baykal.

EXPO QUEEN TO REPORT TO POLICE STATION EVERYDAY
"No overseas travel" prohibition was issued for the owner of CNR Expositions, Ceyda Erem. Criminal court of first instance issued "No overseas travel" prohibition for the "Expo Queen" who was stopped at the Greece border one day after she was released pending trial. Erem will have to report to a police station everyday.

300 NGOS READY FOR DEMONSTRATION
Speaking at a meeting held by the NGOs towards the "Republic" demonstration, chairman of the organisation committee Prof Dr. Ali Ercan said hundreds of thousands of people were expected to march at the demonstration. It was reported that the number of political parties, unions, associations, chambers and platforms has exceeded 300. "Those who are driving the country to tension know themselves. If the President is elected with accord, there will be no tension," said Ercan.

CANKAYA SCENARIOS AT BACKSTAGE
Backstage stirs up as the presidential election approaches. According to a scenario, Erdogan will not be a candidate. A moderate candidate who will not create tension will be the president. Justice and Development Party (AKP) will be swept back into office at the next elections with a vote power enough to change the constitution. With a change to be adopted in 2008 the "presidential system" will be implemented. Thus Erdogan will move to Cankaya Palace as the "first president".

"DIARY" UNDER INVESTIGATION
Bakirkoy Prosecutor`s Office started an investigation on Nokta magazine for the `coupe diary` that was claimed to have belonged to former Naval Forces Commander admiral Ornek. Bakirkoy Chief Prosecutor`s Office will first question Nokta magazine officials and journalists that wrote the news and then proceed from there on.

SHEIKH PROMISES TRNC FOR AN OFFICE
PM Erdogan`s guest Kuwaiti PM Skeikh Nasir al-Muhammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah said, "we will open a TRNC trade office in Kuwait." The Sheikh said they were hoping to see all sorts of industrial products in the Gulf market.

As an initial step towards the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Kuwaiti Premier Nasir Al-Muhammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah said they would open a trade office in the TRNC and import Turkish Cypriot goods and set up official relations with the TRNC.

ISTANBUL PROSECUTOR PROBES INTO COUP ALLEGATIONS
An Istanbul prosecutor has launched an initial investigation into the allegations that a number of former high ranking officers had attempted military coup twice as told in a diary by former Naval Forces Commander Admiral Ozden Ornek. Attempt to military coup is a severe crime under the Turkish Penal Code and can be punished by lifetime imprisonment for attempting to overthrow the constitutional order by use of arms.
