''WE SHOULD INCREASE OUR TRADE VOLUME UP TO 1 BILLION U.S. DOLLARS''
Speaking at the luncheon hosted by the Turkish-Pakistani Business Council, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, who is currently paying an official visit to Turkey as the guest of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, has said, ''current trade volume between Turkey and Pakistan is about 200 million U.S. dollars. This amount is far away from the desired levels. We should increase our trade volume up to 1 billion U.S. dollars. President Musharraf invited Turkish businessmen to make more investments in Pakistan.

''A SOLUTION TO CYPRUS QUESTION WILL PAVE THE WAY OF EU TO TURKEY''
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who came to Turkey yesterday as the official guest of Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, after holding talks with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, said that a solution to the Cyprus question would pave the way of European Union (EU) to Turkey. Noting that Germany considered Turkey a close friend and an important partner, Fischer stressed that they would continue extending full support to Turkey in its European Union (EU) membership process.

A LESSON FROM MRS. MUSHARRAF
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's wife Sehba Musharraf has said that Muslim women were forced to cover their head due to a misinterpretation of the Islam's holy book of Koran. Speaking at a meeting with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's wife Semra Sezer, Mrs. Musharraf said that women's covering their head was a symbol of reactionary attitude.

SPAIN DECORATES NATIONAL DEFENSE MINISTER GONUL WITH MILITARY MEDAL
Spain has decorated National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul with the military medal of merit, the highest military medal in Spain. Spanish Ambassador to Turkey Manuel De La Camara presented Gonul with the medal in a ceremony held at the Spanish Embassy in Ankara. Speaking in the ceremony, Gonul said that increasing cooperation and friendship between Turkey and Spain would be the guarantee of regional stability and expressed full belief that the medal would further improve friendly relations and cooperation between to countries.

BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR PERSONAL FRIENDSHIP
American officials are uneasy about the expressions in Turkish press that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan would call U.S. President George W. Bush to account during his visit to the United States. An expert said that the visit could start a personal friendship between two leaders. Washington was uneasy about the news claiming that Erdogan would deliver ultimatum to Bush regarding Cyprus and Iraq issues.

WE DO NOT WANT TO PUT NEW TAXES AND INCREASE PRICES
The government is searching for a way out regarding the request of International Monetary Fund (IMF) which asked the government to overcome budget deficit with new income items. Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan said that they were exerting efforts not to impose new taxes and not to increase prices.

CYPRUS ISSUE DECISION TO BE TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said that National Security Council's taking a decision about Cyprus question in its meeting on Friday was out of question. He added that the final decision about Cyprus issue would be taken by the government.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf stressed that Turkey would build a perfect bridge between Islam world and Europe by being member of the European Union (EU). He said that western world thought Islam as a terrorism religion. He added that bilateral relations should be developed and Islam should refresh itself.

LAST MINUTE PRESSURE
German Foreign Minister Joshcka Fischer brought two conditions of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to Ankara. Annan told Fischer that he would not accept a change in the spirit of plan and he would not do anything for starting the negotiations, if both sides did not show will for solution.

ERDOGAN TO GIVE INFORMATION ABOUT REFORM PROCESS IN TURKEY
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will leave for Davos city of Switzerland to attend the 33rd World Economic Forum. Prime Minister Erdogan will inform the participants on structural measures taken after two serious economic crises in Turkey and reform process under adjustment efforts with the European Union (EU). The main theme of the forum to be held between January 21 and 25, 2004 was announced as ''Partnership for Security and Welfare''. Besides global economy, political, technological environmental issues will be taken up during the forum. Heads of state and government of many countries and representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations, the EU and the World Bank will attend the forum.

FISCHER EXPRESSES GERMANY'S SUPPORT TO TURKEY
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who came to Ankara for the second time in two months, expressed Germany's support to Turkey in its European Union (EU) membership process. Referring to the Cyprus question, Fischer said that the sides in Cyprus had a historic opportunity and called on both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides to well-assess this opportunity. Fischer stressed that Germany was ready to make all kinds of contributions to efforts of finding a solution to the Cyprus question in line with principles envisaged by the United Nations.

STEP BY STEP EUROPE
We have never been such close to the European Union (EU) of which we have been exerting efforts to be a member for years. The determination of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the steps it has taken in the last one year caused many European countries to give support to Turkey. The first positive message was given by German Foreign Minister Joshcka Fisher who came to Turkey yesterday. Speaking to CNN Turk, Fischer said that Turkey's EU membership was very important for common strategical interests, adding that he was coming to Turkey with friendship, support and loyalty messages.

MUSHARRAF: OUR TRADE VOLUME WITH TURKEY IS FUNNY
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf who came to Turkey as the official guest of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, attended a working luncheon held by Turkish-Pakistani Business Council yesterday. He said that trade volume between Turkey and Pakistan was not on enough level, adding that the trade volume between two countries was 200 million dollars and it was a funny figure as State Minister Kursad Tuzmen also mentioned. Musharraf said that how come Pakistan had a trade volume worth of 200 million dollars with Turkey while this figure was one billion dollars with Afghanistan.

EU CRITERIA TO SECURITY
Interior Ministry will adjust security and order concept to the European Union (EU) standards. ''Mobile Electronic System Integration'' which was earlier implemented in southeast Diyarbakir province will firstly be put into practice in Istanbul within that scope. A computer web will be established and Istanbul will be followed over electronic map. Patrolling vehicles with computers will interrogate criminals without taking them to police stations.

CHINESE AND RUSSIAN LANGUAGES TO BE TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS
National Education Ministry takes action to overcome the lack of personnel who know Chinese language due to increasing economic relations. The Ministry will give Russian and Chinese lessons at schools in 2004-2005 education year. National Education Minister Huseyin Celik sent an official document to Prime Ministry to receive permit from Council of Ministers.
