COLOGNE - Foreign Minister & Deputy Premier Abdullah Gul criticized the new immigration draft law in Germany that conditions a certain level of German in forming a family, saying it is against human rights, on Wednesday.
Abdullah Gul who introduced the e-consulate services for Turks in Cologne, answered questions of journalists.
Upon a question regarding the new German immigration draft law, which lays down a certain level of language proficiency in marriages, Abdullah Gul said "this condition is against human rights, universal laws and the constitution. You cannot ignore basics of human rights in order to solve a problem. This might lead to transgression of other laws in the future. It is wrong."
He added Turkey encourages Turks in Germany to learn German but it is wrong to enforce this as a condition.
Answering a question about Cyprus, Gul said, starting direct trade with TRNC and lifting of isolations is an issue related to EU`s own prestige and credibility. He reminded that European Council and European Commission have taken decisions following the 2004 referendum in the island. "One of these decisions was to start free trade with Turkish Cypriots. That is why I say it is related to EU`s credibility" said Gul.
He stated that Turkey will grant 400 million USD to Turkish Cypriots this year.
Gul also met representatives of Turkish associations in Germany earlier today. The meeting was closed to press.
Turkish FM will leave for Ankara in the evening.
