ANKARA - Turkish documentary filmmaker Nefin Dinc was announced as the winner of the "Special Recognition Award" on world cinema of Washington D.C. Independent Film Festival.
Her documentary film "I Named Her Angel" follows a twelve-year-old Turkish girl, Elif, witnessing the events when she learns about the basics of Mevlevi order.
Mevlevis are also known as Whirling Dervishes in the Western World. They pray by whirling around during the religious ceremony. The founder of Whirling Dervishes is Mevlana, also known as Rumi, a vastly popular poet in the Western world.
Dinc`s film tells the story of Elif learning how to do Sema (whirling), getting dressed for the religious ceremony, attending the religious den for the teachings of the spiritual leader, listening to the chorus and performing at the ancient Galata Temple during the religious ceremony.
